As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and fate to save millions of Jews from genocide. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was accused of involvement in the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler, depicted in the film Operación Valquiria (2008), after Hans von Dohnanyi was accused of being the “spiritual leader” of the attempt. There is no evidence that either man was involved in this particular event and it was merely a pretext to eliminate both. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protest nor force can reach it. Reasoning is useless. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be discredited – indeed, the idiot can retaliate by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can simply be dismissed as trivial exceptions. I agree with other critics who have found two major flaws in this film. AUTHOR. The film tells us (in the scripts) that B has written many books on faith. Yet the film itself never shows him writing, publishing, or discussing books. All we see is B writing his thoughts in a journal. ASSASSIN. Yes, historically there have been many failed plots to assassinate Hitler, and in fact the film shows us one such plot. But there is no fact in the film that shows that B was ever arrested or charged with this. This is a very serious gap in history. CONCLUSION. I am sorry, but I think B deserves a better script and a more vivid story. The Tom Cruise movie Valkari (a non-religious story) which depicts a failed assassination attempt on Hitler is a good example. Bonhoeffer’s film could have used a lot more action to break up what were tedious conversations about faith versus evil.
